4 Warning Signs That a Storm Is About to Get Stronger

Topic: Earth Science

Scientists have found four signs that can help predict when a tropical cyclone is about to strengthen. They used data from nearly three decades of hurricane observations and identified characteristics like compact circulation, favorable wind direction, and warm ocean water as indicators of potential intensification.

Tropical cyclones need to become vertically organized before they can grow stronger. This means their rotating centers at different levels of the atmosphere must line up rather than remain tilted away from each other.

Scientists at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science studied data from NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft over 28 hurricane seasons (1997-2024). They found four features that help tilted tropical cyclones become vertically aligned:

1. A compact, tightly organized circulation close to the ocean surface. 2. A storm tilt positioned favorably relative to vertical wind shear. 3. Stronger rising air and heavier rainfall near the storm's lower-level center. 4. An environment with warm ocean water, plenty of atmospheric moisture, and relatively weak winds in the middle levels of the atmosphere.

Understanding this transition is crucial because rapidly intensifying storms can give coastal communities little time to respond. If forecasters can recognize these signs earlier, they may be able to provide communities with more time for evacuation decisions and other preparations.

Why It Matters

Knowing these warning signs can save lives in India's coastal areas by giving people more time to evacuate during severe storms.

Key Facts

  • Scientists studied data from nearly three decades of hurricane observations (1997-2024).
  • Four features help tilted tropical cyclones become vertically aligned: compact circulation, favorable wind direction, stronger rising air, and warm ocean water.
  • Rapidly intensifying storms can give coastal communities little time to respond.
  • Forecasters may be able to provide more time for evacuation decisions if they recognize these signs earlier.
  • The study used data from NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft.

Key Terms

Vertical wind shear
Changes in wind speed or direction with height.
Tropical cyclone
A rotating storm system that forms over warm ocean waters, like a hurricane or typhoon.
Doppler radar analysis
A technique using radar to measure the velocity of particles in the atmosphere, helping scientists understand storm behavior.

Implications

Knowing these warning signs can save lives in India's coastal areas by giving people more time to evacuate during severe storms.
