AI Tool Helps Scientists Understand How Cancer Begins

Topic: Biology

Researchers used artificial intelligence to study how cancer starts. They found that abnormal chromosomes can lead to cancer. This discovery may help doctors understand why some cancers are more aggressive.

Cancer is a major health problem worldwide. It occurs when cells in the body grow and multiply abnormally. One of the earliest warning signs of cancer is the presence of chromosomal abnormalities. These defects can push healthy cells towards becoming cancerous. A team of scientists at EMBL Heidelberg has developed an AI-based tool to investigate how these chromosomal abnormalities arise. By revealing the conditions that allow errors to form, this technology may help researchers better understand how cancer begins.

The connection between abnormal chromosomes and cancer has been suspected for over a century. German scientist Theodor Boveri first proposed this idea in the early 20th century after studying cells under a microscope. Despite the long-standing theory, studying these abnormalities had been difficult. Only a small number of cells display chromosomal defects at any given moment, and many of those cells die or are killed off through natural cellular selection.

The researchers used an automated platform called MAGIC (machine learning-assisted genomics and imaging convergence). This system integrates microscopy, single-cell sequencing, and artificial intelligence to identify cells with specific features. In this study, the researchers focused on a structure known as a micronucleus. Micronuclei are small compartments inside cells that contain fragments of DNA separated from the main genome. Cells containing micronuclei are more likely to develop additional chromosomal abnormalities, increasing their chances of becoming cancerous.
