Scientists studied Alzheimer's drugs that target amyloid beta proteins. They found that these drugs do not help patients much and might increase brain swelling and bleeding.
A recent study looked at a type of drug designed to remove amyloid beta proteins from the brains of people with Alzheimer's disease. This protein builds up in the brain years before symptoms appear. The researchers combined results from 17 clinical trials involving over 20,000 participants.
The study found that these drugs do not make a meaningful difference for patients. In fact, the effects were very small and below the level considered important for patients. Lead author Francesco Nonino said,
