Topic: Environment

Scientists found that amber lights reduce insect attraction by up to 51%. This can help protect insects from artificial light. The study was conducted in Germany and used six railway stations.

Approximately 40% of the world's insect species are declining due to habitat loss, pollution, and climate change. Artificial light is another major threat. Many insects get drawn to streetlights and security lamps, but they may end up dying after circling them for hours.

Scientists already know that some light wavelengths attract fewer bugs. Researchers at the Leibniz Institute for the Analysis of Biodiversity Change in Germany tested three types of outdoor lighting: high-pressure sodium lamps, cool-white LEDs, and amber 1800 K LEDs. The study took place at six rural railway stations within a German Dark Sky Reserve.

The researchers used traps to track insect numbers, biomass, and species diversity over two field seasons (2023-2024). They compared the different lighting options with each other and with unlit control sites. The results showed that amber 1800 K LEDs consistently attracted fewer insects than high-pressure sodium lamps and cool-white LEDs.

The study found that amber lights reduced total insect numbers by approximately 39% to 51%. Additionally, the total biomass of captured insects fell by 51% to 77% under these amber lamps. The scientists noted that any light is still worse than no light, but amber lights are an improvement.

Why It Matters

This study can help protect Indian wildlife and ecosystems from artificial light pollution. As India's population grows, so does the need for efficient lighting solutions that minimize harm to insects and other animals.
