Beet Juice Lowers Blood Pressure in Older Adults

Topic: Health

A study found that drinking beetroot juice twice a day for two weeks lowered blood pressure in older adults. This is because certain bacteria in the mouth help convert nitrate from food into compounds that support healthy blood vessel function.

Beetroot juice has been shown to have many health benefits, including lowering blood pressure. Researchers at the University of Exeter wanted to see if this was true for older adults as well. They recruited 75 participants, aged 60-70 and under 30, and asked them to drink beetroot juice or a placebo twice a day for two weeks. The team then studied which microbes were present in the mouth before and after each condition.

The results showed that the beetroot juice group had significant changes in their oral microbiome. In older adults, the beetroot juice was linked to a notable drop in Prevotella, a type of bacteria that can be harmful. At the same time, health-benefiting bacteria like Neisseria became more abundant.

The study also found that older adults' blood pressure fell after drinking the nitrate-rich beetroot juice, but not when they drank the placebo. This reduction in blood pressure was not seen in younger adults.

Professor Anni Vanhatalo from the University of Exeter said: 'We know that a nitrate-rich diet has health benefits, and older people produce less nitric oxide as they age. They also tend to have higher blood pressure, which can be linked to cardiovascular complications like heart attack and stroke.'

Why It Matters

This study shows that simple changes in our diet, like drinking beetroot juice, can make a big difference in our health as we age. As Indian students, it's important to understand how our food choices can impact our well-being.
