Topic: Education

A study of 21 Black women professors in South Africa found that they often credited white male professors for their academic advancement. This raises questions about support networks and sponsorship within universities.

Universities have a role in challenging societal inequalities, but often replicate them instead. For example, globally only one-third of senior academics are women. In the US, there are twice as many male professors as female. A recent report in South Africa noted that in 2017, Black women made up 16% of university academics and 40% of the population, making them the most underrepresented group.

A study by a researcher who is not named in the article explored how African female academics navigate institutions where they are a small minority. The researcher conducted in-depth narrative interviews with 21 African female professors at three universities in South Africa's Gauteng province. The aim was to understand how they had advanced to senior positions.

The findings showed that academic advancement is often shaped not only by individual effort, but also by those who create opportunities for others. Many participants credited white male professors with enabling their academic advancement by encouraging doctoral studies, nominating them for leadership roles, supporting their promotions and increasing their visibility in influential networks.
