Brazilian Cities Suffer from Climate-Related Disasters

Mayur Tembhare
  1. .5% of Brazilian cities experienced at least one disaster related to flooding, waterlogging, flash floods, landslides, storms, or drought between 1991 and 2024.

  2. The Southeast had the highest number of flood-, waterlogging-, flash flood- and landslide-related deaths.

  3. The study analyzed approximately 60,000 records of hydrogeological disasters in Brazil.

  4. The researchers found that negligence, lack of infrastructure, and failure to act were major contributing factors to climate-related disasters.

Topic: Environment

A team of Brazilian researchers analyzed data on hydrogeological disasters in Brazil between 1991 and 2024. They found that 91.5% of cities experienced at least one disaster related to flooding, waterlogging, flash floods, landslides, storms, or drought during this period.

Extreme weather events are becoming increasingly frequent and severe. The El Niño predicted for 2026–2027 is one such event. These events have caused environmental, economic, and social impacts in Brazil, requiring specific public policies.

A group of Brazilian researchers analyzed approximately 60,000 records of hydrogeological disasters in Brazil between 1991 and 2024. Their results are published in the journal Environmental Research Letters. The team found that 91.5% of the 5,570 municipalities reported at least one disaster related to flooding, waterlogging, flash floods, landslides, storms, or drought during this period.

The researchers mapped various impacts, including deaths and economic losses. They found that the Southeast had the highest number of flood-, waterlogging-, flash flood- and landslide-related deaths. The South had the highest number of storm-related deaths, and the Northeast had the highest number of drought-related deaths.

Why It Matters

This study is important for India because it highlights the impact of climate change on cities and communities. As India experiences its own share of extreme weather events, understanding how to prevent and mitigate these disasters can help save lives and reduce economic losses.

Key Facts

  • 91.5% of Brazilian cities experienced at least one disaster related to flooding, waterlogging, flash floods, landslides, storms, or drought between 1991 and 2024.
  • The Southeast had the highest number of flood-, waterlogging-, flash flood- and landslide-related deaths.
  • The study analyzed approximately 60,000 records of hydrogeological disasters in Brazil.
  • The researchers found that negligence, lack of infrastructure, and failure to act were major contributing factors to climate-related disasters.
  • The study was conducted by scientists from the National Center for Monitoring and Early Warning of Natural Disaster (CEMADEN), the University of São Paulo (USP) and the National Institute for Space Research (INPE).

Key Terms

El Niño
A natural climate pattern that affects weather patterns in the Pacific Ocean.
Hydrogeological disasters
Disasters related to flooding, waterlogging, flash floods, landslides, storms, or drought.

Implications

This study is important for India because it highlights the impact of climate change on cities and communities. As India experiences its own share of extreme weather events, understanding how to prevent and mitigate these disasters can help save lives and reduce economic losses.
