Topic: Environment

A study by UC Davis found that the mountain jewelflower is struggling to adapt to climate change. The plant's adaptations may no longer match local conditions, threatening its survival. Researchers suggest a strategy called assisted gene flow could help.

A wildflower native to California and Oregon is facing big problems due to climate change. This flower, called the mountain jewelflower (Streptanthus tortuosus), has been living in the mountains for thousands of years. It's adapted to the cold winters and hot summers of these regions.

But now, with temperatures rising and snow melting earlier, the plant is struggling to survive both winters and summers. This is according to a study published by the University of California, Davis (UC Davis).

The researchers looked at how climate change was affecting one part of the species: mountain jewelflowers that live in cold, high-elevation landscapes. They planted seedlings from different regions of California, including both high-elevation areas and lower, warmer, drier areas.

What they found was surprising. The high-elevation plants didn't do as well as expected. In fact, they struggled to survive the hot summer and thin winter snow, which provided them with less protection. This suggests that these plants are no longer well-adapted to their environment.

The study's lead author, Brandie Quarles-Chidyagwai, says this is a problem for the future of the mountain jewelflower. However, she also notes that the research provides hope. It suggests that assisted gene flow could be used to help these plants adapt to the changing climate.

Why It Matters

Climate change is affecting many species in India too, including our native plants and animals. Understanding how other species are adapting (or not) can help us develop strategies for conservation and protecting biodiversity.

Key Terms

Climate change
Changes in the Earth's temperature and weather patterns due to human activities.
Assisted gene flow
A strategy that involves reshuffling a plant's gene variants into new combinations to help it adapt to changing environments.
Evolutionarily
Related to the process of evolution, which is how species change over time.

Implications
