Chemical Contaminants Found in Pre-cooked Seafood Meals

A study by the Universitat Rovira i Virgili found chemical contaminants in pre-cooked seafood meals. Phthalates were the most prevalent contaminants, especially in hake dishes. The levels detected do not pose a significant health risk.

Researchers at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) studied 18 commercial products that were precooked, fresh, chilled or frozen and made with some of the most commonly consumed species in Catalonia: squid, salmon, mussels, prawns, sardines, hake and cod.

The study analyzed the presence of 29 chemical compounds belonging to five families. These chemicals are used in plastics, packaging materials, textiles, paints, coatings, personal care products, and cleaning products. Some can enter the aquatic environment and accumulate in marine organisms, while others can migrate into food from packaging materials during storage, cooking, or reheating.

The researchers found that phthalates were the most prevalent contaminants in most of the dishes, especially in two samples made with hake. Organophosphates were found to be more prevalent in mussels. Despite this, the risk assessment concluded that the levels detected do not pose a significant health risk.
