Diplodocus Found in Spain: A New Discovery in Dinosaur History

Topic: Earth Science

Scientists have found a Diplodocus fossil in Spain for the first time. The discovery helps us understand how dinosaurs moved between continents during the Jurassic Period.

Paleontologists have discovered a Diplodocus fossil in Spain, which is a big deal because it's the first one ever found outside of North America. This finding changes our understanding of where these iconic dinosaurs lived during the Late Jurassic.

The fossils were found at the La Tejería site in El Castellar, Teruel, Spain. A team of paleontologists from the Fundación Conjunto Paleontológico de Teruel-Dinópolis excavated 14 well-preserved tail vertebrae and several chevron bones. Before this discovery, all confirmed Diplodocus specimens were found in the Morrison Formation of the western United States.

Sergio Sánchez Fenollosa, a PhD student at Fundación Dinópolis, led the study. He explained that they used traditional anatomical comparisons and advanced phylogenetic analyses to identify the specimen as a close relative of Diplodocus hallorum. The team's results placed the fossil securely within the Diplodocus genus.

This discovery is significant because it shows that dinosaurs were able to move between North America and Europe during the Late Jurassic. Researchers believe these animals may have crossed temporary land bridges that appeared when sea levels fell.
