  1. The US EPA has approved five pesticides that contain 'forever chemicals' under President Donald Trump.

  2. Forever chemicals have been linked to health problems, including cancer and reproductive issues.

  3. The OECD adopted a broad definition of PFAS in 2021, which includes any molecule with a single fully fluorinated carbon atom.

  4. Roughly half of US states, Congress, and the Pentagon have upheld the OECD definition.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved five pesticides that contain 'forever chemicals' under President Donald Trump. Forever chemicals, also known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), are a class of toxic substances that have been linked to health problems, including cancer and reproductive issues.

The EPA's definition of PFAS excludes the new herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides approved by Trump's administration. However, many scientists and nonprofit groups say these chemicals may pose hidden risks to human health.

PFAS are defined by the carbon-fluorine bond, which is extremely stable and has liquid-repelling properties. This made them prized for firefighting foam, nonstick pans, raincoats, and more. However, evidence linking them to cancers, immune conditions, and reproductive harms has triggered billion-dollar settlements, new laws, and corporate phaseouts.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) adopted a broad definition of PFAS in 2021, which includes any molecule with a single fully fluorinated carbon atom. Roughly half of US states, Congress, and the Pentagon have upheld this definition, as did 150 scientists in a 2024 consensus statement.

In contrast, the EPA under President Joe Biden narrowed the definition to include only chemicals with two or more adjacent fully fluorinated carbon atoms, which it deemed less likely to persist. One such pesticide was approved under Biden, but Trump's second term has added five more.

Why It Matters

This issue matters because forever chemicals are found in many everyday products and can contaminate water sources, posing a threat to human health. In India, where water pollution is already a significant concern, this issue should be of particular interest to students and policymakers.

Key Facts

  • The US EPA has approved five pesticides that contain 'forever chemicals' under President Donald Trump.
  • Forever chemicals have been linked to health problems, including cancer and reproductive issues.
  • The OECD adopted a broad definition of PFAS in 2021, which includes any molecule with a single fully fluorinated carbon atom.
  • Roughly half of US states, Congress, and the Pentagon have upheld the OECD definition.
  • Trifludimoxazin, one of the new herbicides, has 'suggestive evidence of carcinogenic potential,' according to the EPA's own review.

Implications

This issue matters because forever chemicals are found in many everyday products and can contaminate water sources, posing a threat to human health. In India, where water pollution is already a significant concern, this issue should be of particular interest to students and policymakers.
