Satellite images show a glacier collapsed on the Nepal-China border, causing massive floods that killed hundreds of people. Scientists say climate change is likely to blame.
Scientists reviewed satellite imagery after catastrophic flooding along the Nepal-China border. The flooding killed hundreds of people in Nepal and Tibet, with many more missing. Geomorphologists Kristen Cook and Dan Shugar looked at images from Langtang Lirung peak, near the border with Tibet. They saw that a glacier had broken off, but also noticed something else: the bedrock underneath the glacier had collapsed.
This meant that a huge chunk of ice was swept down into the valley, taking boulders and ice with it. The debris buried villages and towns along the river banks. Satellite images showed how much sediment was carried by the floodwaters - the water turned from greenish to very brown because of all the mud.
The flooding was so powerful that it pushed upstream, widening a side river. Towns and villages were submerged in debris and mud. Some houses were still visible in an image of the Betrawati area.
Scientists say this is one of the largest glacier floods they've seen. Alton Byers, a mountain geographer at the University of Colorado at Boulder, thinks climate change is to blame. He says the Earth's warming is melting glaciers and permafrost, causing instability and breakage of massive amounts of snow and ice.
Byers has studied glacial hazards in Nepal for years and works with communities to prepare. He believes that Wednesday's flooding is related to climate change.
Why It Matters
This disaster shows the impact of climate change on our planet. Rising temperatures are melting glaciers, causing massive floods and landslides. We need to understand these changes to protect ourselves and our environment.
Key Facts
- A glacier collapsed on the Nepal-China border, causing devastating floods that killed hundreds of people.
- The bedrock underneath the glacier also collapsed, sweeping a huge chunk of ice down into the valley.
- Satellite images showed how much sediment was carried by the floodwaters - the water turned from greenish to very brown because of all the mud.
- Scientists say climate change is likely to blame for the flooding, as rising temperatures melt glaciers and permafrost.
- The disaster shows the importance of understanding glacial hazards and preparing communities for such events.
Key Terms
- Glacier
- A large mass of ice that forms on land by accumulation and compaction of snow over time.
- Permafrost
- Ground that remains frozen for two or more consecutive years, often found in high-latitude regions.
Implications
This disaster shows the impact of climate change on our planet. Rising temperatures are melting glaciers, causing massive floods and landslides. We need to understand these changes to protect ourselves and our environment.
