Global Warming Speeds Up Since 2015

Topic: Environment

Scientists found that global warming has been getting worse since around 2015. They removed natural events like El Niño and volcanic eruptions from temperature records to see the true trend.

Global warming has been increasing at a faster pace since about 2015, according to a new study. Researchers from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) analyzed global temperature records to identify a statistically significant rise in the rate of warming. They found that during the past decade, global temperatures have climbed at an estimated rate of about 0.35°C per decade, depending on the dataset analyzed.

The study focused on determining whether the pace of warming has changed, rather than identifying the causes behind that shift. The researchers applied two statistical techniques: a quadratic trend analysis and a piecewise linear model that identifies when shifts in warming rates occur.

The study's lead author, Stefan Rahmstorf, notes that if the warming rate continues, it would lead to a long-term exceedance of the 1.5°C limit of the Paris Agreement before 2030. He emphasizes that how quickly the Earth continues to warm ultimately depends on how rapidly we reduce global CO2 emissions from fossil fuels to zero.

Why It Matters

This study matters because it shows us that climate change is happening faster than expected. As India works towards reducing its carbon footprint, understanding the pace of global warming can help us make better decisions for our planet's future.

Key Facts

  • Global temperatures have climbed at an estimated rate of about 0.35°C per decade since 2015.
  • The study found that the pace of warming has accelerated significantly since around 2015.
  • If the current warming rate continues, it would lead to a long-term exceedance of the 1.5°C limit of the Paris Agreement before 2030.

Key Terms

El Niño
A natural event that temporarily raises global temperatures

Implications

This study matters because it shows us that climate change is happening faster than expected. As India works towards reducing its carbon footprint, understanding the pace of global warming can help us make better decisions for our planet's future.
