Gut Compound Helps Protect Liver in Children

Topic: Research News

Scientists found a compound made by healthy gut bacteria that helps protect children's livers from fatty liver disease. Mothers who eat a diet high in fat and sugar during pregnancy and breastfeeding are more likely to have children with this condition.

Mothers' diets can affect their children's health, even after birth. A new study found that a compound called indole, made by healthy gut bacteria, can help protect children from fatty liver disease.

Fatty liver disease is a growing problem in children and adults alike. It often advances quickly in children and is closely linked to diabetes. The prevalence of this condition is about 30% in obese children and 10% in those without obesity.

The study, led by Jed Friedman at the University of Oklahoma, looked at how gut bacteria affect fatty liver disease development. They fed pregnant and nursing mice a high-fat, high-sugar diet and gave some mice indole. The offspring born to mothers who received indole had healthier livers, gained less weight, and developed smaller fat cells.

The researchers also found that the microbiome itself plays a central protective role in preventing fatty liver disease. They transferred gut bacteria from the protected offspring to other mice and found that those mice also experienced less liver damage.

This study's findings point to new strategies for reducing the growing impact of fatty liver disease through early prevention. Anything we can do to improve the mother's microbiome may help prevent the development of this condition in her child.
