Hedgehogs Can Hear Ultrasound: A New Way to Save Them from Cars

Topic: Biology

Scientists at Oxford University discovered that hedgehogs can hear ultrasonic sounds. This could lead to devices that keep them away from roads and other dangers.

Hedgehogs are in trouble. Many of them get killed by cars, especially on European roads. But scientists have found a way to help. They discovered that hedgehogs can hear ultrasonic sounds – sounds too high for humans to hear. This means they might be able to design devices that keep hedgehogs away from roads and other dangers.

The research was done at the University of Oxford, with collaborators in Denmark. The scientists tested 20 rehabilitated hedgehogs' hearing by playing different sounds through a small loudspeaker. They found that the hedgehogs can hear sounds ranging from 4-85 kHz, with their strongest sensitivity around 40 kHz.

The researchers also looked at the structure of the hedgehog's ear using high-resolution micro CT scans. This helped them create a detailed interactive 3D model of the ear. They found that the ear is designed to transmit very high-pitched sounds efficiently, which helps the hedgehogs detect ultrasonic vibrations.

If future research confirms that these devices are effective, they could be used to keep hedgehogs away from roads and other dangers like robotic lawnmowers and garden strimmers.

Why It Matters

This discovery matters because it could help reduce the number of hedgehogs killed by cars. As India's cities grow, so do the problems of animal-human conflict. This technology could be used to protect not just hedgehogs but other animals that are vulnerable to human activities.

Key Facts

  • Hedgehogs can hear ultrasonic sounds ranging from 4-85 kHz.
  • The strongest sensitivity is around 40 kHz.
  • Researchers found that the ear structure of hedgehogs is designed to transmit high-pitched sounds efficiently.
  • Ultrasonic repellents could be used to keep hedgehogs away from roads and other dangers.

Key Terms

Ultrasound
Sounds too high for humans to hear, but can be detected by some animals like hedgehogs.

Implications

This discovery matters because it could help reduce the number of hedgehogs killed by cars. As India's cities grow, so do the problems of animal-human conflict. This technology could be used to protect not just hedgehogs but other animals that are vulnerable to human activities.
