Hidden Species: Scientists Discover Many More Vertebrates Than Thought

Topic: Biology

Scientists at the University of Arizona found that for every known vertebrate species, there are two more that have gone unnoticed. These 'cryptic' species look almost identical to known species but are genetically distinct.

Vertebrate species, like fish, birds, and mammals, were thought to be well-known. But a new study suggests that for every recognized vertebrate species, there are two additional species hiding in plain sight. These overlooked organisms, called 'cryptic' species, appear almost identical to known species but are genetically distinct.

The researchers used DNA analysis to reveal these hidden species. Traditionally, scientists identified and classified animals based on visible physical traits, or morphological features. However, cryptic species complicate this process.

The team found that the trend of hiding cryptic species is widespread across major vertebrate groups. For example, in Arizona, the mountain kingsnake was considered a single species until molecular research showed that snakes from Northern Arizona were genetically distinct from those in the south.

To answer how common this phenomenon might be across vertebrates as a whole, the researchers compiled and analyzed findings from more than 300 published studies worldwide.

Why It Matters

This discovery is important for India because it highlights the need to protect and conserve our biodiversity. With many species going unnoticed, we may be losing them before we even know they exist.

Key Facts

  • For every known vertebrate species, there are on average two additional cryptic species that have gone unnoticed.

Implications

This discovery is important for India because it highlights the need to protect and conserve our biodiversity. With many species going unnoticed, we may be losing them before we even know they exist.
