Keto Diet Reduces Liver Fat by 67% in Clinical Trial

Topic: Health

A clinical trial found that a keto diet reduced liver fat by 67% and improved prediabetes in people with obesity. The study compared three diets: keto, Mediterranean, and low-fat. Researchers from Washington University School of Medicine led the study.

A recent clinical trial published in the Cell Press journal Cell Metabolism found that a very low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet called the ketogenic or 'keto' diet can provide stronger metabolic benefits for people with obesity than other diets.

The study involved 42 participants who were randomly assigned to follow a keto diet, a Mediterranean diet, or a low-fat, plant-forward diet. The researchers supplied all their food and met with them every week to help them stay on track. All three groups lost about 10% of their body weight over four to five months.

However, the keto group showed the largest drop in liver fat - an average reduction of 67%. This is a significant improvement in metabolic health. The researchers also found that participants in the keto group had improved insulin sensitivity and reduced blood insulin levels compared to those following other diets.

Why It Matters

This study has important implications for people with obesity and prediabetes in India, where these conditions are prevalent. A diet that can reduce liver fat and improve metabolic health could be a game-changer for many Indians struggling with weight-related issues.
