Losing Weight with Ozempic Linked to Better Health Outcomes

Topic: Health

A new study found that people who lost more weight while taking Ozempic had lower risks of health problems like osteoarthritis and heart failure. Those who gained weight faced worse outcomes.

New research shows the importance of losing weight when using GLP-1 medications like Ozempic. These medicines help with obesity and type 2 diabetes. The study, led by Professor John Wilding from the University of Liverpool, looked at data from over 89,000 patients in the US. They wanted to see how much weight people lost or gained while taking these medications and what happened afterwards.

The researchers found that most patients (75.6%) started taking semaglutide medications like Ozempic or Wegovy. About 61% of them had type 2 diabetes. On average, patients were 57.5 years old with a BMI of 34.7 kg/m2.

The study showed that people who lost more weight during the first year after starting treatment had lower risks of health problems like osteoarthritis, chronic kidney disease, and heart failure. In fact, those who lost at least 15% of their BMI experienced a 37% lower risk of osteoarthritis, a 30% lower risk of chronic kidney disease, and a 32% lower risk of heart failure.

On the other hand, patients who gained weight faced worse health outcomes. They had a 10% higher risk of osteoarthritis, a 14% higher risk of chronic kidney disease, and a 69% higher risk of heart failure.

The researchers concluded that losing more weight while taking Ozempic is linked to better health outcomes.
