A recent study found that mass shootings in the US led to a temporary increase in fatal car crashes. The day after 8 out of 10 deadliest shootings showed a 14.3% rise in traffic deaths, with an average of 20 additional deaths across the country.
A new study has discovered a disturbing link between mass shootings and car crashes in the United States. Researchers found that the day after major mass shootings, there was a significant increase in fatal traffic accidents nationwide.
The study examined data from 10 of the deadliest mass shootings in the US between 2008 and 2023. They analyzed traffic fatality data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), a government database that records every deadly motor vehicle crash on public roads across the country.
The researchers compared the number of traffic deaths on the day after each shooting with the average number of deaths during the 10 days leading up to it. They found that the day after 8 out of the 10 deadliest shootings showed a temporary increase in fatal traffic crashes nationwide, with an average rise of 14.3% or roughly 20 additional deaths across the country.
This means that the extra traffic deaths on the day after these mass shootings added up and equaled about 75% of the number of people killed in the shootings themselves. The findings were published in JAMA Psychiatry, a peer-reviewed medical journal.
The researchers suggest that this link may be due to the psychological impact of mass shootings on people's ability to drive safely. When people are exposed to shocking or highly stressful news, their attention can become locked onto the event, making it harder to notice and process other important details around them, such as road safety.
This is especially critical while driving, where a momentary distraction can have serious consequences.
