The discovery was made by a research team led by Álvaro Penteado Crósta, a geologist from the State University of Campinas (IG-UNICAMP). The team collected over 600 pieces of tektite material, which vary in size and shape. Some are as small as a grain of sand, while others are up to 5 centimeters long.
The tektites were first found in three municipalities in northern Minas Gerais state. As more research was done, additional finds were reported in Bahia and Piauí states. The total known distribution now stretches over 900 kilometers.
When you look at the tektites at first glance, they appear black and opaque. But under strong light, they become translucent with a grayish green hue. This is different from other types of tektites found in Europe, which have been used in jewelry for centuries.
The surfaces of the Brazilian specimens are pitted with small cavities. These cavities are traces of gas bubbles that escaped during the rapid cooling of the molten material as it traveled through the atmosphere.
Laboratory analysis shows that the tektites contain high levels of silica, ranging from 70.3% to 73.7%. They also contain sodium and potassium oxides, which account for 5.86% to 8.01% of their composition. The presence of rare inclusions of lechatelierite further confirms an impact origin.
The age of the asteroid impact was determined using a method called argon isotope dating. This indicates that the impact occurred around 6.3 million years ago, near the end of the Miocene epoch.
