UNESCO warns that a tsunami in the Mediterranean is inevitable. The risk of such an event has been underestimated, and it's crucial to take preventive measures to save lives.

The Mediterranean Sea is often thought to be at low risk for tsunamis. However, history and recent research have shown that destructive waves have hit the French coast before and could do so again. A project in Nice and along the French Riviera found that anticipation and evacuation measures are the only effective way to save lives during a tsunami.

Tsunamis are powerful natural disasters triggered by earthquakes, underwater landslides, or volcanic eruptions. They can cause sudden flooding and strong currents near the coast, with waves reaching several meters high. Since 1970, tsunamis have claimed over 250,000 lives worldwide.

UNESCO has warned that there is a 100% chance of a tsunami at least one meter high in the Mediterranean Sea within the next 30 years. The Mediterranean basin has recorded many historical tsunamis, including some that have affected France's Côte d'Azur coastline. In fact, around twenty incidents were reported along the French Riviera between the 16th century and the early 2000s, with waves often exceeding two meters.

The sources of Mediterranean tsunamis can be local or distant. In some scenarios, the first waves can reach the coast in under ten minutes, while others may take less than 90 minutes to arrive from further away.

In June 2022, UNESCO declared that there is a high risk of an offshore tsunami in the Mediterranean. This warning comes after a field enquiry showed that eight marinas on the French Riviera experienced significant sea level drops and strong currents during the Boumerdès earthquake in Algeria in 2003.
