Most people think they make deliberate decisions every day, but research suggests otherwise. A team of scientists from the University of Surrey, the University of South Carolina, and Central Queensland University found that about two-thirds of daily behaviors are guided by habit rather than conscious decision making.
The study, published in Psychology & Health, used a new method to track habits in real-time. The researchers recruited 105 participants from the United Kingdom and Australia and asked them to describe what they were doing at specific moments throughout the day. They also indicated whether their actions were triggered by habit or performed intentionally.
The results showed that about 65% of daily behaviors were initiated habitually, meaning most actions were prompted by routine cues rather than deliberate choices. This suggests that
