Mysterious Planet Nine: Is it Real or Just a Theory?

Topic: Research News

Astronomers have been searching for a new planet in our solar system. Some think they found evidence of this hidden planet, but others are skeptical.

Is there a massive undiscovered planet on the outer reaches of our Solar System? This idea has been around since before Pluto was discovered in the 1930s. Astronomers thought that an unseen planet could be pulling Uranus's orbit off track. But then, they recalculated Neptune's mass and the mystery was solved. Or so they thought! In 2016, astronomers Konstantin Batygin and Mike Brown at Caltech proposed a new theory of a potential planet nine. They suggested that this planet could be affecting the orbits of objects in the Kuiper Belt, a region beyond Neptune where many small icy bodies orbit the Sun. Many of these objects don't follow a smooth path around the Sun, which led Batygin and Brown to propose planet nine as an explanation. This would be similar to how our Moon orbits the Earth due to its gravitational pull.

However, there are challenges to this theory. Some astronomers question whether we have enough data from Kuiper Belt objects to prove the existence of planet nine. Others suggest alternative explanations for their motion, such as the effect of a ring of debris or even a small black hole. The biggest issue is that our solar system's outer regions haven't been observed long enough to notice any subtle changes.

New discoveries in the Kuiper Belt have also presented challenges for the planet nine theory. One object, known as 2023 KQ14, was discovered by the Subaru telescope in Hawaii. It's a 'sednoid,' meaning it spends most of its time far away from the Sun, where Neptune's gravitational influence is minimal.

Despite these challenges, some astronomers believe that planet nine could be real. Mike Brown said in 2024: 'I think it is very unlikely that P9 does not exist. There are currently no other explanations for the effects that we see, nor for the myriad other P9-induced effects we see on our Solar System.'
