The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has powered up its massive 300-megapixel camera. This will help scientists study planets beyond our solar system and understand dark energy.

NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has reached a major milestone in space. The Wide Field Instrument, a 300-megapixel infrared camera, has been successfully powered up. This instrument is designed to survey large areas of the universe quickly while capturing fine details.

The camera can take images that cover an area larger than the apparent size of a full moon. This combination of wide coverage and high resolution will allow Roman to conduct massive surveys of the cosmos. Scientists plan to use these observations to learn more about planets beyond our solar system, investigate mysteries like dark energy, and study how matter is arranged throughout the universe.

The team at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, led by Josh Schlieder, has confirmed that the instrument is operational in space. They spent 10 days drying out and decontaminating the instrument before activating its detectors. The detectors were cooled to minus 225 degrees Fahrenheit (-143 degrees Celsius) to activate them.

The team also tested the coronagraph instrument, which can directly image planets orbiting other stars. This technology is advanced and has never been sent into space before. Roman's expansive observations will create a valuable dataset for many scientific studies.
