Scientists in Oregon have developed a new treatment that targets lung cancer and muscle wasting simultaneously. The treatment uses tiny particles to deliver genetic material directly to lung tumors, reducing tumor growth and promoting muscle growth.
Researchers at Oregon State University (OSU) have created an experimental treatment for lung cancer that also tackles the severe muscle loss associated with it. This condition is called cachexia.
The treatment uses lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) to carry therapeutic genetic material directly to lung tumors. LNPs are tiny particles, typically measuring between one and 100 billionths of a meter. They are made up of fatty acids and related organic compounds that include many natural oils and waxes.
In experiments using mice, the team led by Oleh Taratula and Yoon Tae Goo tested nanocarriers containing follistatin messenger RNA (mRNA). The nanoparticles accumulated in lung tumors, where the mRNA instructed cells to produce follistatin. Follistatin is a protein that can help suppress tumor growth while also supporting muscle tissue.
The researchers designed their treatment to address both problems at once by using follistatin mRNA, which has effects related to both tumor suppression and muscle growth. They found that their approach achieved an approximately 2.5-fold greater reduction in tumor burden compared to conventional LNPs.
Why It Matters
Lung cancer is a major health concern in India, with over 150,000 new cases diagnosed every year. A treatment that can target both lung cancer and muscle wasting could greatly improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
