Scientists at UC San Diego warn that the ocean is losing oxygen too fast. This could be bad news for our planet and its creatures.
A new study published in Limnology and Oceanography warns that the rapid loss of oxygen from the ocean and other aquatic ecosystems is pushing Earth towards an 'unsafe space'. The study, led by scientists at UC San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography, found that human activities like warming, pollution, and changes in water circulation are causing this oxygen loss. This could have severe consequences for our planet and its creatures.
The researchers reviewed the interactions between aquatic deoxygenation (the decline of dissolved oxygen in the ocean) and nine other processes outlined by the Planetary Boundaries framework. They proposed adding dissolved oxygen conditions to the framework, which was first introduced in 2009. The framework helps scientists understand how human activities affect the planet's stability.
Lead author Erica Ferrer said that aquatic ecosystems need oxygen to function normally. 'The health and stability of our planet depend on the health and stability of aquatic ecosystems,' she explained. The study aims to raise awareness about aquatic deoxygenation as a global threat and its impact on other planetary boundaries.
Why It Matters
This is important for India because many Indian cities are located near coastlines, and ocean pollution can affect our food supply and health. Climate change also affects India's monsoon patterns, which in turn impacts agriculture and water availability.
