Ozempic Helps Older Adults Lose Weight and Improve Health

Topic: Health

A new study found that Ozempic, a medication for weight loss and diabetes, helps older adults with obesity lose weight and improve their health. The study looked at data from over 350 people aged 65 or older who took the medication.

A team of researchers led by Prof Luca Busetto from the University of Padova in Italy analyzed data from several clinical trials to see how well Ozempic worked for older adults with obesity. They found that participants who took Ozempic lost a significant amount of weight and saw improvements in their health over 68 weeks.

The study looked at people aged 65 or older who had obesity, but did not have diabetes. The participants were randomly assigned to take either Ozempic or a placebo, and all received lifestyle intervention. Those in one group also received intensive behavioral therapy.

The researchers measured several outcomes, including changes in body weight, waist circumference, and blood pressure. They found that those who took Ozempic experienced an average weight loss of 15.4%, compared to 5.1% for those who took the placebo. Waist circumference also decreased more sharply with Ozempic, by an average of 14.3 cm versus 6.0 cm with the placebo.

The study showed that many participants achieved major weight loss milestones, such as losing at least 10%, 15%, or 20% of their body weight. More participants taking Ozempic also moved into healthier BMI categories and saw improvements in their cardiometabolic health.

Why It Matters

This study matters because it shows that Ozempic can be an effective and safe treatment for older adults with obesity, who are often at higher risk for health problems due to their age and multiple health conditions. This could lead to more options for people in this age group to manage their weight and improve their overall health.
