Placebo Pills Can Improve Memory and Physical Performance in Older Adults

Topic: Health

Researchers found that older adults who took placebo pills for three weeks showed improvements in memory, physical performance, and stress levels. This was true even when participants knew the pills were fake.

Scientists at the Università Cattolica in Milan studied how placebos can affect older adults. They gave 90 healthy older adults either a real pill or a fake one. The people who took the fake pills, but knew they were fake, showed the most improvement in memory and physical performance. This was surprising because we often think that placebos only work when people don't know they're taking a fake treatment.

The researchers used questionnaires to measure stress levels, psychological well-being, sleepiness, fatigue, optimism, self-efficacy, and stereotypes about aging. They also gave tests to measure short-term memory, selective attention, and physical performance.

After three weeks, the participants who took the placebo pills experienced lower stress levels than those who didn't take any pills or who took fake pills without knowing they were fake. They also showed significant improvements in short-term memory compared with those who received no intervention.

Why It Matters

This study shows that placebos can have real benefits for older adults, even when they know the treatment is fake. This could be important for people who are looking for ways to improve their physical and mental health as they age.
