A multinational study found that people taking popular GLP-1 medications for weight loss and type 2 diabetes are more likely to experience nail detachment and discoloration. The study, which included over 1,900 participants from four countries, showed that 66% of GLP-1 users reported at least one nail disorder compared to 53% of non-users.
Popular weight loss drugs linked to nail problems in users
A multinational study has found a surprising link between popular weight loss medications and nail problems. The study, which was presented at the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV) Congress 2026, looked at over 1,900 people from four countries: France, the United States, Brazil, and Mexico.
The researchers found that people taking GLP-1 medications were more than four times as likely to experience nail detachment, a condition where the nail separates from the skin underneath it. In fact, 39% of GLP-1 users experienced nail detachment compared to just 9% of people who had never taken the medications.
Nail discoloration was also much more common among GLP-1 users, with two-thirds (66%) reporting at least one nail disorder. The researchers were surprised by these findings and emphasized that they do not prove that GLP-1 drugs cause nail disorders.
The study's authors suggested that the link between GLP-1 medications and nail problems may be due to other factors, such as weight loss or existing skin conditions. However, even when they accounted for these factors, the differences in nail health between GLP-1 users and non-users remained significant.
In fact, the researchers found that nail detachment was approximately two to three times more common among GLP-1 users after adjusting for these factors. They also found higher rates of hair loss and scalp problems among people taking GLP-1 medications.
Why It Matters
This study is important because it highlights a potential side effect of popular weight loss medications that may not have been well-known before. As more and more Indians turn to these medications for weight loss, it's essential to be aware of the possible risks involved.
