This is because mangrove plants are highly specialized and require a certain duration of flooding with each tide. If this period is exceeded, the location will no longer be suitable for the plants, and they will 'drown' and die back.
As mangroves die and carbon-rich soils erode, carbon that had been locked away can be released back into the environment. This means that rising sea levels could actually increase the amount of carbon in the atmosphere, making climate change worse.
