A team of scientists has discovered a new species of lizard in western Thailand. The lizard is named after Syrax, a dragon from a popular fantasy series. It's a small, yellowish-green lizard with unique characteristics.
Scientists have found a new species of lizard living in the high mountain forests of western Thailand. This new species is called Acanthosaura syrax and belongs to a group of lizards known as mountain horned dragons.
The researchers discovered the species in an evergreen forest within Mae Wong National Park, at elevations above 1,300 meters. So far, it has not been found anywhere else. The team was led by Poramad Trivalairat and colleagues from Chulabhorn Royal Academy and Kasetsart University.
The scientists chose the name Syrax because several traits of the fictional dragon are reflected in the newly described lizard. For example, both have yellow coloration and relatively small size compared to other dragons. The researchers also found that A. syrax produces relatively large clutches of eggs for its body size.
Genetic testing supported the physical differences observed by the researchers. An analysis of two genes showed that A. syrax is genetically distinct from its closest known relative, A. lepidogaster, as well as from every other recognized species in the group.
Why It Matters
This discovery highlights the importance of conservation efforts in protecting unique and vulnerable species like Acanthosaura syrax. The high-elevation forests of Mae Wong National Park are home to many rare animals, including the Asian forest tortoise, Oldham's leaf turtle, and the Indochinese tiger.
