Scientists Discover Diet That Tricks Body into Burning Fat Without Exercise

Topic: Biology

Researchers found that a specific diet can trick the body into burning fat without exercise. They discovered that reducing two amino acids in food, methionine and cysteine, increased energy burn and weight loss in mice.

Mice shiver to stay warm, but humans don't have to freeze to burn extra calories. Scientists have been trying to find ways to make the body behave as if it's cold, without ice baths or freezing temperatures. Instead of lowering temperature, researchers Philip Ruppert and Jan-Wilhelm Kornfeld from the University of Southern Denmark explored a different strategy: reducing two specific amino acids in food to switch on thermogenesis. They found that diet-induced thermogenesis produced almost the same weight loss as constant exposure to five degrees Celsius around the clock.

The team adjusted the levels of methionine and cysteine in the animals' diets over seven days. Mice that ate a diet low in these amino acids burned more calories than mice fed a standard diet. The researchers found that the extra calorie burning took place in beige fat, a type of fat stored just under the skin.

This study has potential implications for obesity treatments and could lead to new ways to help people lose weight without major lifestyle changes.

Why It Matters

This discovery can help develop new treatments for obesity, which is a major public health concern in India. By understanding how diet affects thermogenesis, scientists can create functional foods that promote weight loss and improve overall health.

Key Facts
