Researchers at UC San Francisco found that people with multiple sclerosis have higher levels of certain immune cells that respond to Epstein-Barr virus. This suggests the virus may contribute to the disease.
Multiple sclerosis is a long-term autoimmune condition that affects nearly one million people in the United States. Scientists have known for years that Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is closely linked to MS, but they didn't know how it contributed to the disease.
A team of researchers at UC San Francisco has made new discoveries that may help explain this connection. They found that people with MS have higher levels of certain immune cells called CD8+
