Scientists Discover New Way to Predict Volcano Eruptions

Topic: Earth Science

Researchers from France have developed a new method called 'Jerk' that can detect tiny signals before a volcano erupts. This could help warn people in danger and save lives.

Predicting volcanic eruptions is a big challenge for scientists. They want to know when an eruption will happen, how powerful it will be, and how long it will last. But right now, they can't always get the timing right. This can cause problems like false alarms that lead to costly evacuations and economic disruption.

A team of researchers from France has developed a new method called 'Jerk' that can detect tiny signals before a volcano erupts. These signals are so small that they're almost impossible to see, but they can reveal the earliest stages of volcanic activity in real time. The team tested their method for ten years at a volcanological observatory on the island of La Réunion.

The 'Jerk' method uses a special kind of seismometer to detect extremely subtle ground movements linked to magma intrusions deep underground. These signals are so faint that they can only be detected with a very sensitive instrument. But when the signal gets strong enough, it's like a warning bell ringing - it tells us that an eruption is likely to happen soon.

The researchers tested their method for ten years and found that it was able to forecast 92% of the eruptions that occurred during that time. The warnings came anywhere from just a few minutes to as much as eight hours before an eruption began. This could give people in danger plenty of time to get out of harm's way.

The 'Jerk' method is still new, but it has the potential to become an important early warning tool for volcanoes that are not closely monitored. It could help save lives and reduce the impact of volcanic eruptions on communities.

Why It Matters

This discovery matters because it could help keep people safe in areas where volcanoes are active. India is home to many volcanoes, and predicting when they might erupt is crucial for protecting people's lives and property.
