Scientists used the James Webb Space Telescope to study a rocky exoplanet called LHS 3844 b. They found that it's a scorching hot planet with a surface temperature of around 1000 Kelvin.

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has revealed a new super-Earth, LHS 3844 b, which is about 30% larger than our own Earth. This rocky exoplanet orbits a cool red dwarf star in just under 11 hours and is extremely close to its star, only three stellar diameters above the surface.

The planet's surface temperature reaches an average of around 1000 Kelvin (approximately 725 Degrees Celsius or 1340 Degrees Fahrenheit). The team led by Laura Kreidberg used the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on board JWST to study the surface composition of LHS 3844 b.

The findings suggest that the planet's surface is dark, hot, and barren, devoid of any atmosphere. It may resemble an enlarged version of the Moon or Mercury. The team analyzed infrared radiation emitted by the planet's hot dayside and compared it with computer models and libraries of known rocks and minerals from Earth, the Moon, and Mars.

The study revealed that LHS 3844 b does not have a crust similar to Earth's, which is typically rich in silicate minerals like granite. Instead, the data point to a surface made of basalt or mantle-like rock, similar to volcanic material found on Earth or the Moon.
