Topic: Health
A new procedure called duodenal mucosal resurfacing may help people keep weight loss after stopping popular medications like Ozempic. Researchers found that this minimally invasive treatment can encourage the growth of new, healthier tissue in the small intestine.
About 70% of people who stop taking these drugs eventually regain much of the weight they lost, often within 18 months. A team of researchers has been working on a solution to this problem. They found that a procedure called duodenal mucosal resurfacing may offer a safe and lasting way to maintain weight loss without ongoing medication.
This procedure uses controlled heat to remove damaged tissue from the inner lining of the small intestine, which encourages the growth of new, healthier tissue. The study involved 45 people who had previously lost at least 15% of their body weight using tirzepatide before stopping the drug. On average, patients lost about 40 pounds while on GLP-1 therapy.
The results showed that participants who received the resurfacing treatment regained less weight than those who underwent a sham procedure. In fact, patients who had more extensive resurfacing regained only about 7 pounds and kept more than 80% of their weight loss.
Why It Matters
This study is important because it offers a potential solution to the problem of weight regain after stopping medications like Ozempic or Wegovy. This could be especially helpful for people who struggle with side effects, cost, or long-term use of these drugs.
