Scientists discovered a new spider species in Australia that uses a powerful silk trap to catch ants. The spider creates a special web to capture one type of ant, the green tree ant.

In the rainforests of northern Queensland, researchers found a newly discovered spider species that has evolved an extraordinary hunting technique. This small nocturnal arachnid has been nicknamed the ballista spider due to its ability to launch ants into a deadly trap.

The spider creates a unique web system designed specifically to capture the aggressive green tree ant, Oecophylla smaragdina. The discovery and detailed analysis of the spider's hunting behavior were published in the journal Current Biology.

Researchers from Macquarie University spent 10 days searching for the spiders in rainforest near Cooktown. They used high-speed and infrared cameras to document the animals' remarkable behavior.

The ballista spider specializes in hunting a single type of ant, which is unusual because ants are notoriously dangerous. Ants have chemical defenses and can recruit thousands of other ants as backup to overcome predators.

During daylight hours, the ballista spider remains hidden beneath a leaf. After dark, it descends and creates an elaborate vertical trap using silk strands bundled together into a cone-shaped arrangement near the ground.

The spider wraps the cone with thinner silk and quickly retreats upward. Moments later, a green tree ant approaches and bites the cone, accidentally detaching it from the anchor point. This triggers the trap, launching the ant more than 30 centimeters upward into the spider's main web.
