A new report shows that sponsorship is crucial for career advancement, but most relationships lack trust and feedback. Only one in four sponsorships are effective.

A recent research report has found that sponsorship plays a vital role in helping individuals progress to senior leadership roles. However, the study reveals that only a small proportion of sponsorship relationships are successful. The report was conducted by the FTSE Women Leaders Review and co-authored by Professor Elena Doldor from Queen Mary School of Business and Dr. Madeleine Wyatt from King's Business School.

The research involved extensive interviews with senior leaders in a global consulting firm and identified four types of sponsorship relationships: assigned, resistant, shallow, and reciprocal. The study found that only reciprocal sponsorships, which involve mutual trust, active advocacy, candid feedback, and shared investment, were associated with the strongest promotion rates. Unfortunately, less than a quarter of sponsorship relationships fell into this category.

The report's authors emphasize that many organizations present leadership promotions as objective and meritocratic, but in reality, sponsorship and informal political dynamics play a significant role in career advancement. They recommend that inclusion initiatives should focus on matching diverse talent with sponsors and providing support for these relationships to flourish.
