The Matua Community: Music and Rituals Bring People Together

A community of 50 million people across India, Bangladesh, and other countries has found a way to stay connected despite national borders. Their music and rituals have played a vital role in their society and even helped them organize protests.

Professor Carola Lorea from the University of Tübingen's Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology has studied the Matua community for over 10 years. She found that religious songs, drum rhythms, and shared stories have made it possible for the community to stay connected despite being scattered across different countries.

The Matua people are severely disadvantaged in society and have been forced to live in remote areas throughout their history. However, they are now very well organized and their vote can influence election results. This has caught the attention of politicians who are beginning to court them.

Lorea believes that understanding the Matua's music and religion is key to understanding them. She says,
