Scientists have been studying Leonardo da Vinci's family tree for over three decades. They've found a way to map out previously unknown branches of his family and identify living male descendants linked directly to Leonardo's father.

They've been working with the Municipality of Vinci and other institutions to create a detailed family tree that spans 21 generations and includes over 400 individuals.

The researchers have identified 15 living male descendants linked directly through the paternal line to Leonardo's father and his half-brother, Domenico Benedetto. This has opened the door for genetic analysis. David Caramelli from the University of Florence worked with forensic anthropologist Elena Pilli to analyze DNA from six of these descendants. The results showed that segments of the Y chromosome matched across the participants.

The team has also identified a Da Vinci family tomb at the Church of Santa Croce in Vinci, Italy. Archaeological excavations are currently underway to uncover the remains of Leonardo's relatives. If the DNA extracted from the site matches that of living descendants, it could strengthen historical records and family lineage reconstructions.
