Women with breast cancer who have low vitamin D levels may face a more painful recovery after surgery, according to a recent study. This is because they might require significantly more opioid medication afterward.

The research, published in the journal Regional Anesthesia & Pain Medicine, suggests that breast cancer patients with vitamin D deficiency (below 30 nmol/L) might benefit from taking vitamin D supplements before undergoing a radical mastectomy.

Patients with low vitamin D needed more opioids during and after surgery. On average, they received 8 μg more fentanyl during surgery and an additional 112mg of tramadol afterward.

The study also found that patients with low vitamin D experienced postoperative nausea more often.

While the study has limitations, the researchers concluded that vitamin D deficiency is associated with a higher occurrence of moderate to severe postoperative pain and increased opioid consumption in patients undergoing unilateral modified radical mastectomy.
