Walking 8,500 Steps a Day Can Help Keep Weight Off

Topic: Health

Scientists found that walking around 8,500 steps a day can help people avoid regaining weight after dieting. This is especially important because most people who lose weight tend to put some or all of it back on again within three to five years.

Walking more each day is often encouraged in weight loss programs, but until now, there wasn't much evidence showing whether this actually helps people lose weight while dieting. Researchers from Italy and Lebanon wanted to investigate further. They reviewed 18 studies that compared people who walked more with those who didn't. The studies included over 3,700 adults from several countries, including the UK, US, Australia, and Japan.

The researchers found that people who increased their daily step count during a weight loss phase and continued to walk more afterward were more successful at maintaining their weight loss. In fact, they kept off most of the weight they had lost. The average person in these studies walked around 7,280 steps per day initially, but those who participated in lifestyle modification programs increased their daily step count to an average of 8,454 steps by the end of the weight loss phase.

The study's lead author, Professor Marwan El Ghoch, says that preventing weight regain is a major challenge when treating obesity. He believes that finding strategies like this one can help people maintain their new weight and improve their overall health.

Why It Matters

This research matters because it shows that making small changes to our daily habits, like walking more, can have a big impact on our health.
