WiFi Routers Can Now Identify People with High Accuracy

Topic: Technology

Researchers in Germany have developed a system that uses ordinary WiFi signals and AI to identify people with near perfect accuracy. This technology can turn everyday routers into surveillance tools, raising concerns about privacy.

Imagine being identified by a WiFi router without even using your phone or laptop. Researchers in Germany have made this possible with their new system that uses ordinary WiFi signals and artificial intelligence (AI) to identify people with near perfect accuracy. This technology can turn everyday routers into surveillance tools, raising concerns about privacy.

The researchers from KASTEL -- KIT's Institute of Information Security and Dependability demonstrated the system by observing the propagation of radio waves and creating an image of the surroundings and people present. This works similar to a normal camera, but instead of using light waves, they used radio waves.

According to Professor Thorsten Strufe, the technology can identify individuals even if they are not carrying an active device. Turning off your smartphone is not enough to avoid detection, as nearby wireless devices connected to the network still generate enough signal activity for the system to work.

The researchers tested the system with 197 participants and found that it identified individuals with nearly 100% accuracy. The recognition remained effective regardless of viewing angle or how the participants walked.

The team is warning about the potential risks to our fundamental rights, especially to privacy, and is calling for stronger privacy protections and safeguards to be included in the upcoming IEEE 802.11bf WiFi standard.
