Topic: Environment

New wildfires broke out in Greece on Friday due to strong winds. Four water bombers and five helicopters were deployed to fight the fires, but firefighters struggled to contain them. The country has been plagued by heat waves and drought this summer.

Wildfires have flared up in several parts of Greece this week, including on the popular island of Crete. On Friday, strong winds made it difficult for firefighters to control the blazes.

A forest fire broke out on a nearby mountain in Haidari, a suburb west of Athens. The Civil Protection mobile phone alert ordered the partial evacuation of part of Haidari. Four water bombers, five helicopters, and more than a hundred firefighters were mobilized to fight the fire.

The latest fire near the Greek capital comes on the fourth consecutive day of fires across the country. Many parts of the country faced a 'very high' wildfire risk, including the Athens region, Crete, and the Peloponnese. Winds of up to 88 kilometers per hour were forecast for Friday, disrupting ferry services.

The strong winds are lifting embers that can spark new outbreaks, sometimes far from the main fire front. Two separate fires broke out in coastal Viotia, 85 kilometers northwest of Athens. Some 200 people were evacuated to a nearby beach.

Why It Matters

Greece is experiencing its worst wildfires this summer due to climate change. The country's geography makes it challenging for emergency responders to reach affected areas quickly. This highlights the need for effective disaster management and climate action in India as well.
