The Role of Apprenticeships and Vocational Training

The Smarter Path After Class 12 (2026 Guide)

Every year, right after the board examinations results come out, one question comes up in millions of households: “Is college the only option?” For many years, this has been an open-and-shut case: After completing education from school, join college, complete a degree, and then hope to get employment at the other end. But there is one more competitor in the race now, which is not just being pushed by the government but even the labor market and increasingly dissatisfied students.

The competitor is the world of apprenticeships and vocational education, which in light of NEP 2020 and the advent of Industry 4.0 is no longer considered a “back-up plan”. It is gaining more popularity.

If you have searched for “apprenticeships after 12th” on Google, this article is meant for you.

Why Everyone's Suddenly Talking About Apprenticeships

Two major changes have prompted the need for this discussion.

One, NEP 2020 has institutionalized it. The National Education Policy mandates that vocational education be integrated into the schooling system from class 6 onwards, with the aim of ensuring that no less than 50% of all students are acquainted with vocational education by 2025, both through the school system and higher education institutions. The aim is to treat vocational education as a profession right from the beginning rather than as an alternative.

Secondly, the advent of Industry 4.0 altered the requirements of the employers themselves. For technologies such as automation, robotics, AI enabled manufacturing and smart factories, people who know how to work the machines, troubleshoot the system, and learn from actual industrial experience are required rather than those who just know theoretical aspects. Having a Bachelors degree without any experience in the factories is sometimes worth less than even one year of training through apprenticeship.

Also, there has been the initiative by the Government itself of 'Skill India Mission' that has spent the last decade creating the infrastructure of ITIs, Polytechnics, Sector Skill Councils and portals to make skill based careers common practice than a backup option.

Apprenticeship vs Vocational Training: What's the Actual Difference?

They are often used synonymously, but they are different concepts.

Vocational training refers to learning in a particular vocation through classrooms and workshops – electrical works, plumbing, tailoring, beauty and wellness, hardware IT, hotel management, and many more vocations. It is mostly offered in ITIs (Industrial Training Institutes), Vocational Training Centers, or short courses such as PMKVY. First comes the skill, then comes the employment.

In contrast, in the case of apprenticeship, the roles get reversed. The individual gets posted in an organization, be it a factory, a hospital, a bank, or PSU, and learns through hands-on training from a mentor who himself is skilled in his field. It is a structured form of training under the Apprentices Act of 1961, wherein not only the learner but also the employer have certain responsibilities.

These include providing good training, a stipend, working hours, and at the end of the term, a certificate which is considered work experience.

Vocational Training Apprenticeship Traditional College

Where you learn Classroom / workshop Real workplace Classroom / lecture hall

Duration Weeks to 2 years 6 months to 4 years 3–4 years

Earning while learning Rarely Yes, monthly stipend No

Outcome Skill certificate National Apprenticeship Certificate + work experience Degree

Best suited for First-time skill learners Fast, job-ready track Research / degree-mandatory careers

The Real Selling Point: You Earn While You Learn

This is the sole factor responsible for the popularity of apprenticeships. An apprentice is assured of:

  • Monthly allowance right from the start (current range between ₹6,800 and ₹12,300 and above, varying according to qualifications and program and being revised periodically)
  • Training in a real organization as opposed to theoretical training
  • A government-approved qualification after completion – National Apprenticeship Certificate for compulsory trades and Certificate of Proficiency for optional trades
  • Experience which is credible as it has been through a recognized training program

For a family to choose between spending four years on college education and going for a year-long paid apprenticeship, it usually adds up to favouring the latter, particularly in technical, manufacturing, healthcare support and IT hardware trades.

Government Schemes You Should Actually Know About

However, there are various schemes, and choosing the appropriate scheme will be dependent upon the nature of your qualification:

1. National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS): Under this scheme, which is operated by the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, there is the largest umbrella scheme for apprentices that is open to all including ITI pass-out, Class 8th /10th/12th pass aspirants, Diploma and Graduates. It involves reimbursement of some portion of the stipend to the employer directly by the government to motivate them to take up apprentices, and the candidates have to register themselves through the official Apprenticeship India portal.

2. National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS): This scheme targets only the engineering diploma holders and degree graduates, operated by the Ministry of Education Board of Apprenticeship/ Practical Training, and placement offered in PSUs like BHEL, HAL, ISRO, and many others.

3. PM-DAKSH Yojana: This scheme targets the SC, OBC, EWS, DNT and Safai Karamchari Communities and involves provision of free skill training along with a stipend, operated by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

4. PMKVY (Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana): Short-term skill certification scheme of Skill India Mission.

Every month, the government also holds the Pradhan Mantri National Apprenticeship Mela (PMNAM) - a walk-in recruitment drive held across districts where candidates can meet employers directly and get placed on the spot.

Who's Eligible, and How Do You Apply?

Although there may be slight differences in eligibility criteria for each of the schemes, in general:

  • Mandatory minimum age: 14 years (18 years for hazardous industries)
  • Mandatory minimum education: 5th/8th pass to Class 12th, ITI, Diploma, and Degree depending upon whether one opts for basic or advanced trade
  • Application process: It involves filling application forms online on the national apprenticeship portal, wherein both the applicant and employer create an account, view vacancy details, and apply

Overall process involved: Registering online at the portal → completing your profile & uploading necessary documents → searching and applying for open apprenticeship/vocational seats → selection interview → beginning training & drawing stipend.

A Quick Reality Check

These are not lifetime employment; rather, they are meant to be an educational avenue to become certified. This means that whether you will continue working with that employer after completion will depend on your performance and whether the employer requires more personnel. Evaluations conducted independently of these programs have indicated that there are some who secure employment after completion, and this is what it’s all about.

Is It Right for You?

If you prefer practical skills, wish to begin earning soon, and plan to enter the field of technology, industry, healthcare support, sales, service, or hardware IT – an apprenticeship or vocation course can equip you quicker and more economically than college. If your plans involve research, a professional career in fields such as medicine or law, or a job which requires a degree by law, then college is still the way to go.

The optimal choice for modern students is not “college or skills”, but rather the synthesis of both within the flexible model offered by NEP 2020 where vocational credits are combined with college education.
