A research team at KAIST, led by Professor Keon Jae Lee, has developed a breakthrough in skin treatment technology: a flexible, deep-stimulating LED mask clinically proven to enhance skin elasticity by an impressive 340%. Traditional LED masks have rigid designs that fail to conform closely to the face, resulting in significant light reflection, with up to 90% of light reflected over just a 2 cm distance, reducing its effectiveness in reaching deeper skin layers.
A New Approach to LED Mask Technology
To overcome these limitations, Professor Lee's team introduced a face-conforming surface lighting micro-LED (FSLED) mask, designed to fit snugly to the contours of the face. This design ensures consistent photostimulation across the dermis, enabling more effective penetration and even treatment. The FSLED mask achieves this through a unique 3D origami-inspired structure that houses 3,770 micro-LEDs. A specialized, flexible light-diffusion layer further improves its ability to distribute light uniformly across the skin while minimizing gaps between the light source and the skin’s surface.
Clinical Trial Results and Future Plans
Clinical trials with 33 participants demonstrated that the FSLED mask offers a 340% improvement in skin elasticity over traditional LED masks, and it significantly reduced signs of aging, such as wrinkles and sagging. "The FSLED mask offers substantial cosmetic benefits across the entire facial dermis without the risk of low-temperature burns," said Professor Lee. “This innovation opens doors to effective at-home anti-aging treatments, enhancing quality of life.” The mask is now being manufactured by KAIST startup Fronics and will be available globally through Amorepacific’s network, with a launch date set for November.
